11 Saint Isidro

11 Saint Isidro
American Icon, New Mexico, late 20th century Signed and dated lower right: Carrillo, 93
This icon depicts the story of St. Isidore the Farmer. St. Isidore was a late eleventh, early twelfth Century saint from Madrid. He was very Pious and would attend daily mass every day before working the fields. He always got his work done, however, after some of his fellow workers complained about him praying more than working, the man who owned the fields forbade Isadore to attend the daily mass. Isidore continued to get all of his work done. His fellow workers continued to complain and one day the landowner decided to go to the field to see what was going on. When he arrived, he saw Isidore in prayer and two angels doing the work of tilling the land.
This icon depicts St. Isidore in the field with two oxen hooked up to a plow. While Isidore is praying in front of the cross, we can see an angel coming down to help plow the field so that St. he can pray.
