34 Kazan Mother of God

34 Kazan Mother of God
20th century
This icon is another version of the Kazan Mother of God Icon. The Kazan Mother of God icon is in the style of the Virgen Hodegetria or “She who shows the way.” The original icon that this is based on was said to be found wrapped in a cloth in the ruins of a house in the city of Kazan in 1579 after Our Lady appeared to a young girl named Matrona. It is considered a miracle working icon and is called upon to intercede in the healing of sick children. The icon which is now considered the original Kazan Mother of God hangs at the Marian Shrine in Fatima, Portugal. Notice how Mary adorningly looks on Jesus as the Christ Child is giving his Mother a blessing. The Monogram for Mother of God in Greek is to the right and left of Mary’s halo. There is a white cross depicted in the halo behind Christ’s head with three Greek letters, omnicron, omega, and nu. These three letters represent the holy name of God revealed to Moses, “I Am Who I Am” or “He That Is”.
The Kazan mother of God is perhaps the most widespread icon in Russia.
Notice how Mary adorningly looks on Jesus as the Christ Child is giving his Mother a blessing. Her face is grave but sweet while Christ stands upright clothed in gold, full face towards the faithful. The Mother of God seems to contemplate Christ’s mission as Savior come into the world to suffer the Passion.
