1987, Artist: Marie Romero Cash (American, 1942 – ) Size: 111⁄4”x91⁄4”

This icon depicts St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. With his right hand he holds a image with three letters, I, H, and S. The IHS represents the Greek letters iota, eta, sigma, the first three letters in Jesus’ name. Thus IHS is a monogram for Jesus. With his left hand he points to the monogram, thus directing us always to Jesus Christ. The IHS is also the symbol used by the Jesuit Order.
