13 Kazan Mother of God

13 Kazan Mother of God
Russian Icon, late 19th-early 20th century, Size: 14” x 12 1⁄4”
This icon is a copy of the Kazan Mother of God Icon. The Kazan Mother of God icon is in the style of the Virgen Hodegetria or “She who shows the way.” The original icon that this is based on was said to be found wrapped in a cloth in the ruins of a house in the city of Kazan in 1579 after Our Lady appeared to a young girl named Matrona. It is considered a miracle working icon and is called upon to intercede in the healing of sick children. The icon which is now considered the original Kazan Mother of God hangs at the Marian Shrine in Fatima, Portugal.
The Kazan mother of God is perhaps the most widespread icon in Russia.
Notice how Mary adorningly looks on Jesus as the Christ Child is giving his Mother a blessing. Her face is grave but sweet while Christ stands upright clothed in gold, full face towards the faithful. The Mother of God seems to contemplate Christ’s mission as Savior come into the world to suffer the Passion.
